Recording via Edge servers
< back to overviewI recently received a question concerning the set up needed to record video through an edge Flash media server.
As you know there are 2 versions of the FMS 3 server available, a streaming and interactive edition (also a developer edition but that is out of the question right now).
Both versions can be put in origin of edge server. Which basically means they are either hosting all original content (origin) or just acting as a gateway to the content (edge). This is more understandable in a diagram:

A friend of mine asked me if it was possible to record a video on an origin interactive server through a streaming edge server. The answer is no, it is not possible for a streaming edition server to pass through the video stream to an interactive origin server for recording. Both the origin as the edge server must be interactive editions of the flash media server.
I myself find it a pity that this is not possible. After all, the edge server doesn’t need the capabilities to actually save the video. It should just transfer the data to the origin server.
